Do you use the “turn the camera on its side” trick to get vertical shots? If so, how often do you do so? Or do you just shoot everything horizontal, and then crop?

We almost always frame the shots in camera, rather than cropping afterwards. So yes, we turn the camera on it’s side pretty much always. So much so that Steve has the portrait grip thingy for his 5D2 to make it more comfortable to hold in that orientation. The Hasselblad doesn’t have such a gadget but is reasonably comfortable to hold in portrait format anyway.

One wants to make the most of the camera’s resolution, so we try to fill the frame and compose the shot correctly in camera rather than throwing away large portions of the image in post.

    Cheers, Hywel.
