    Hi All,

A lot of you probably already know about Ariel’s blog, at http://blog.ameliajanerutherford.com (Amelia Jane Rutherford is Ariel’s spanking alter-ego by the way).

I’ve decided to have a personal blog myself too, along with an update to my http://www.hywelphillips.com website which has languished untouched for the last few years. Of course, I’ll still be posting all matters directly Restrained Elegance related here, but this is an opportunity and a motivator for me to do a bit more general photography again, too. Having photography as a job has rather killed off my doing it for fun, which was making me sad, so I thought this was a good project to get me going again.

I’ll be posting some more techie photographic stuff on there- I thought the kit reviews that Sheep was asking for might be good to post there (and link from here of course) for example.

Anyway, I’ve just done my first actual blog post after a fun afternoon at the Vale of the White Horse, so if you are at all interested please drop by and say hi: http://www.hywelphillips.com/HywelPhillips.com/Blog/Blog.html

    Cheers, Hywel

P.S. I know the layout and formatting of the hywelphillips.com site is a bit less than ideal, but there’s no way I’m going to maintain a second site unless doing so is utterly, utterly trivial, so I’ve taken advantage of a lot of the automation features of Apple’s iWeb/Aperture/MobileMe system, which at least lets me do stuff quickly and easily. Important, or it won’t get done.

I like your blog, Hywel…. and I also HATE tripods!!!!

I have only taken one single shot where I could say I wouldn’t have been able to take it without a tripod – or an umbrella. Also, the battery in my camera went dead at the crucial moment (probably due to ‘wrestling’ with my tripod!), but luckily I managed to turn it back on and got one shot out of it! It is still a bit soft (although not as soft as the compressed jpeg looks), but I managed to catch the raindrops 🙂 (attached).[attachment=0:2oebfwf5]CRW_2752.jpg[/attachment:2oebfwf5].

I since decided I didn’t have the patience for landscape photography and that tripod since went on ebay. On the rare occasion that I pick up my camera and ‘shoot for fun’, I tend to use a monopod which doubles up as a handy walking stick 🙂

Kate (getting techy – sorry Ariel!!) x

    Greetings from New Jersey,

Nice blog Hywel. Some of the photo tech stuff is way over my head given my limited photographic skills but that’s fine. Enjoyed a number of the landscape photos. Very nice. And, of course, the fetish ones weren’t bad either.

Kate, like your photo as well. Hopefully you and the other RE photographers will share some of your non-fetish work as time permits as well.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Hmm, I was trying to think if I’d ever used a tripod. Then I remembered this shot.

Which of course would have been impossible without the tripod. Even then it took about 20 takes to get it. Not a serious shot, Pretty fun to take.

I think it’s great you now have a blog, Hywel. Plus I’m even more pleased you’re shooting for fun too!

Kate, you have made me very happy! I’ve only tried landscapes a few times, and on each occasion I had the tripod with me. Having read various magazines on the subject, it seemed using a tripod was pretty much the law! I had no success at all for the same reasons both you and Hywel have described…. I really like your raindrops photo!

Nice shot, Sheep! Painting with light is tricky; you did well to get it. Yep, definitely need a tripod for that.

I’ve posted 2 pics below, and both of them should have required a tripod. I’m delighted to say I never used one! The first shot I took on a beach in Cornwall. It was a horrific stormy day, raining and very windy. This was shot hand held whilst trying to hold a silly plastic sheet over the camera to protect it. I probably used up the whole memory card with all my attempts. Hooray for digital cameras! But this has been heavily over sharpened in photoshop.

The second is Hong Kong. Shooting at night in low light with long shutter speeds was horrid, but I sort of managed without a tripod, even though it’s not properly sharp and a bit grainy due to the high ISO.

So I’m glad to share the opinion tripods have there place, but they are a lot of hassle and you can do without them! 🙂

I used to have a monopod too. It was better than a tripod, but still not as fluid as handheld. Has anyone had any experience of things like gorlliapods or clamps? I don’t really know if such a thing would stay in my kitbag unused or be a helpful addition. You need something like a post or fence or tree to attach it to, but it gets you height which a beanbag doesn’t.

    Cheers, Hywel.

I love that shot from Cornwall. Very dramatic.

I’ve not used a gorrilla pod, However my brother always has one with him and swears by it.
