Just watched the latest episode of Dr Who on BBC1, featuring the return of the awesome Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith.

We’ve talked a bit about classic bondage images and inspiration from the mainstream media… well Lis Sladen was definitely responsible for my liking for smart, sassy, streetwise damsels-in-distress! Sarah Jane Smith always used to get into the most perilous death-traps, screamed her head off… sometimes got rescued and sometimes got herself out of trouble and went and rescued everyone else. Plus she was slim, gorgeous and had the sexiest voice ever to appear on TV. (Just hearing Lis Sladen’s voice in the new episode sent shivers down my spine). Dr. Who books were basically my introduction to reading fiction… I can only remember a few of the scenes now but at the time they were the best bondage literature a kid could get!

    :devil

Did anyone else have a fondness (fondness? Insane lust is probably closer to the mark…) for Sarah Jane Smith, or is it just me? And what did you think of the new episode? And didn’t you think Lis Sladen looked drop dead gorgeous given that it is nearly thirty years since she last played Sarah Jane? Yum!

What were your early inspirations? I think Sarah Jane was top of my list. Later Dr Who assistants were nice enough but didn’t have the same combination of strength and vulnerability… nor were they quite as stunning as Lis Sladen. (Leela’s leather minidress was pretty memorable, but most of the later ones were either stroppy or sappy, not in the same league). Penelope Pitstop, Linda Carter as Wonder Woman, the Bionic Woman (Lindsay Wagner), Charlie’s Angels (heretically I thought Cheryl Ladd was far sexier than Farrah Fawcett)… I’m sure there were more, but those are the ones which spring to mind. I am damn sure I had the “bondage thing” from a very early age- these shows just reinforced and directed something which was already present. What about you? When did you first get interested in bondage?

    Cheers, Hywel.

    Hi All;

I read Hywels post this morning before rushing out for work (why must it always be a rush??) and have been thinking about it all day. Firstly (and sorry about this folks) I think I was too young to see Sarah Jane Smith in Dr Who the first time round – I cerainly don’t remember her – though I do recall Dr Who was always good for a damsel in distress. Am really hoping the current series gets round to providing Billie Piper a proper DID scene. Incidentally what are you thinking of David Tennants portrayal of the Dr – I think he is doing a really good job.

Aside from that, Hywels post had me thinking all day because I can now own up to one of my childhood fantasies, that must have had some major affect on my adult life. I have already mentioned in here The Paul Daniels Magic Show (when he tied Debbie Magee up shortly before sawing her in half), but by far the fondest childhood memory has to be Penelope Pitstop in the Perils of Penelope Potstop (the spin-off from the wacky races). Never before or since has one woman been captured, tied-up and threatened with some grim torment so often – and this was childrens entertainment. Previously I have struggled to express this crush to anyone as it seemed all a little odd, she was afterall a cartoon character, but Hywel said it first, so I left for work this morning thinking myself normal.

Unfortunately during the day it dawned on me that maybe Hywel and I are both a little odd – but that can’t possibly be true – we are both Dr’s. She was very cool though HEEEeeeLLLLllllP (in drawn out American accent).

I think Jasmine Sinclair would make a good Penelope Pitstop. We need some pink clothing and a suitably fiendish peril (a gauntlet thrown down to all those Dick Dasterdly and Mutleys out there!!!)

By the way – if there are any scenes from film and TV that you remember fondley (mostly Film) I have found many of my favorites on http://htfvidcaps.dyndns.org/ it is not updated all that regularly and you will soon begin to realise a German influence but in general it is good stuff. You might also want to take a look at the vidcap page of http://restrainedtastes.com/knotbusters/ (especially those of you who are here for the foot content).

mmmm, we didn’t have a television when I was a child, so I only had a chance to find bondage imagary in books…. The Famous Five were always getting tied up by kidnappers and pirates, such fun, but alas, they always escaped (bloody Timmy the dog was too helpful)

And The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was quite full of bondage, too – I read it lots…..

I think David Tennant is a vast improvement on Christopher Eccleston (who by his own admission “didn’t really like the show as a kid because all the Doctors spoke with a BBC English accent” – how petty a reason is that?). He doesn’t have Eccleston’s irritating habit of leaning against doorways and gurning either.

I like the darker side to his character, the lack of patience with the bad guys (“One warning is all you get, and that was it.”) but thankfully he seems to have avoided turning that into a Jerry Bruckheimer all-USA-tough-guy act. On a totally unrealated note, watch “Team America World Police” from the guys who made South Park as the perfect antidote to all those lousy Hollywood action movies!

I agree with the Paul Daniels/Debby McGee deathtrap scenarios too (hence EvilMagician.com!) I don’t seem to do all that many genuine Damsel-in-distress sets, which is bad… I ought to do more with the deathtraps and devices really oughtn’t I? Some of the Evil Magician props like the spiker table would work really well for a TV-style damsel-in-distress deathtrap.. Hmmm..

Ariel- not the Famous Five! Argh!! English facists!! :lick :lick
Interesting question- from what vague recollections I have, it was not only the female characters who used to get tied up. Did you enjoy reading about anyone getting tied up, or only girls? I can be quite definite that my buzzer was only ever pressed by females getting tied up, from the very earliest age, which is one of the reasons I think my dominant/sadistic side was kinda pre-programmed with my sexuality even before I was old enough to really have a defined sexuality. Stories with men tied up just didn’t compute- no particular OBJECTION to James Bond being put in a deathtrap, but the only thing that would catch my interest would definitely be if a gorgeous glamour girl was also in the same deadly situation. Live and Let Die… Jane Seymour… bondage voodoo ritual… now you’re talking!! :heybabe :heybabe

Was it the same from the sub’s perspective for you? Or could you put yourself into the bondage situation regardless of the sex of the character in the story?

    Cheers, Hywel.

Hmmm, that’s an interesting question. I can see how men being tied up wouldn’t have excited you, but for me it was quite easy to put myself in their position; I suppose it was just that I didn’t have access to much stuff, so I liked what I could get! I certainly wouldn’t be interested now, James Bond in peril does nothing for me either (except that he is quite pretty, isn’t he?).

The games I played with my big sister took a decidedly bondage/SM slant as soon as I was old enough to make any decisions about what we played (the poor Sindy dolls suffered a great deal in the process). It all culminated in me creating a game called ‘Escapology’ with my cousins, which involved us tying each other up and timing the escape attempts. Alas, my mother wasn’t having any of it and said we weren’t allowed to play it any more 🙁

What about everyone else? What are your early bondage tv/fiction memories?

Mine is Batman and Robin. That kick-started my Bonadge fetish, and once Catwoman got herself in to a bind, I was in heaven! :devilishangel
After that, I seem to recall any show with a woman being bound and preferably gagged a turn-on. As i got older and more experienced, crap / lazy bondage, where all you had to do to escape was cough, became annoying. I then turned to harmony mags from a seedy shop in Victoria, and videos from business trips to L.A.
For Bondage to work, it has to be “real” – ie tight – and if the woman just happens to be wearing a short skirt, a tight top, stockings and suspenders, long gloves and knee high boots with her hair tied up and sexy make-up, and struggling for Britain in tight bondage and a mouthfilling gag, then all my levers are pulled!

    Hi all

I’m sure you’re right about the pre-programming Hywel, I can remember very early in my childhood being strangely fascinated during cheesey old films when the overacting village girl was chained to the sacrificial rock etc to await the impending dragon / monster / marauding welshmen… :lick

In my class at school one of the girls failed to turn up after a break, eventually search parties were dispatched to find her and there were very worried faces all around. At length she was found in tied to a rainwater pipe with her skipping rope in the staff carpark. Yep, I almost got kicked out of school for that one… in my defence I was 8 and had no idea what a Dom was.. still don’t know why I didn’t tell anyone tho, duh! :dunce

The whole guys in distress thing had never occurred to me until know. I’ve had to really think to remember any but now I have I’m sure it’s just as common as the damsel variety, its just that I’m not really looking..

How come nodoby’s mentioned Diana Rigg / Emma Peel? mmmmMMMmmmm :love2 Childhood memory of Mrs Peel chained to a dungeon wall sporting a scold’s bridle anybody…?

Definitely the Avengers was a favorite of mine in my youth. Both bad girls & Emma Peel got captured & restrained. And Mrs. Peel was never wimpy.

Batman against Catwoman was also suggestive, but I don’t think Catwoman was ever really captured in the TV series. Pity really.

Actually Hywel my favourite Dr who assistant was Jo Grant :p which goes back just a bit further than Sarah Jane ( Then I am slightly older I guess ).
Romana was my second favourite as the posh voice with the Star Wars Princess Leila style looks ( and I guess that was deliberate, because that was the 70’s early eighties era ) was really compelling and sexy.

Billie Piper is doing an excellent job in the new series as is the Doctor himself : David Tenant who I believe has consigned Christopher Ecclestone’s portrayal into obscurity. BUT I still think Paul Mcgann should have continued in the role after the 1996 film.

Nice to see that Debbie Mcgee figures with some of the bondage fans 🙂 and Hywel’s right we perhaps dont do enough of that over at evilmagician.com, but then we haven’t had some of the props that lend themselves to obvious tying up of the assistant in the plot of the routine.

Who remembers Tegan (played by Janet Fielding when Tom Baker was the doc?)?
She was a cute air stewardess who bumped in to the Doctor – cue opportunity for very cute (and tight) outfit (I think it was purple?) with a sexy hat and heels. I’m sure like most men, we all have a weakness (fantasy) for a sexy maid of the air! And she got in to lots of predicaments in that outfit, and I was hooked, though I’m not sure she ever got to be tied up (apart from in my dreams!!):singhappy
Doc – I think it’s time you did another air stewardess set!

    tighter:
Oh yeh I remember Teagan (the other female assistant at the time was Nyssa- who raised soppiness to a new art-form. Teagan was stroppy).

It was a cute purple airline stewardess outfit, I can just picture it now. I wonder if it is possible to get outfits like that somewhere? (Industrial clothes supplier probably…?)

I don’t recall her getting tied up… anyone else remember?

Airline stewardess set- check. I’ve been trying to think of a cheap and cheerful way of building an airliner interior set actually…

Rob: Jo Grant? You’re OLD mate! :oo :oo LOL
She was before my time. Cute blonde though. She did a lot of screaming and a LOT of banging into things and tripping over. That’s because the actress who played her was very short-sighted and wasn’t allowed to wear her glasses on set! (Before the days of contact lenses..??)

Here’s hoping Billie Piper finds herself tied up in a proper Doctor Who deathtrap some time this series!!

I really think we should make more of the Damsel In Distress stuff for Evil Magician at our next shoot. If we work with a really cute scream-queen actress like Belle or Jasmine, maybe we can come up with some fun ideas?

Never saw the Avengers, more’s the pity. Joanna Lumley in the New Avengers was OK but I don’t recall much bondage.

SURELY Catwoman (and Batgirl) got tied up in the 1960’s TV series?? My memory may be clouded by time but I find it hard to believe it didn’t happen given how often Batman and Robin got tied up.

Incidentally, for bondage in comics (and a hilarious section of “Batman and Robin- are they gay?” have a look at SuperDickery.com. Seduction of the Innocent and Suffering Sappho sections are the best!

Can’t recommend it highly enough but don’t read whilst attempting to drink Coca-Cola unless you enjoy coke shooting out of your nose coz you’re laughing too much…

The Avengers was an absolute favorite – Emma Peel (played by the delightful Diana Rigg) followed by Linda Thorson as Miss King were often captured and tied up (often following a good fight), though unlike in a lot of series these women were more than just eye candy and did have a ‘thinking’ role, making their ultimate capture all the more powerful.

As for the mention of the Batman women take a look at this website dedicated to the perils Batgirl got herself into

    http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Labyrinth/8120/chronological.html

there are links to photos at the bottom of the often legthy description of the scenario if you just want to cut to the chase. Would really enjoy seeing some more damsel in distress stuff on RE.
