Thanks to all involved in the latest “Get in the Van, Bitch” video. OK, I did suggest a “van” theme earlier in the year so it can’t be a surprise that I liked the concept. Still, I thought I should say so. Visually it had the contrast between the hard angularity of the van interior and the soft curves of the girls. Emotionally it had the dehumanising idea of being treated as goods.

But I also liked a few little features that I thought made good video even if not very believable in terms of the story. For example, the “victim” was neither gagged nor had her legs tied until well into the piece. A true kidnap victim could have screamed or placed a well aimed kick before running away. There was even the (I thought) lovely section where the “captor” cut off the victim’s knickers although the legs were still not tied and her trousers had been removed by pulling them down (all without screams of protest).

I suppose everyone has their own ideas on how “realistic” videos and photosets should be – and we must expect variations as Hywel tries to cater for all tastes. Too realistic and I feel I’m watching a horror movie (or a certain type of 20th century documentary) rather than a bondage video: too silly and it would descend into unintended farce. I guess we all draw the dividing lines in different places.

So, for me, lots more with silly bits like this one – or even sillier. Didn’t Kate once say something like, “the loonier the better”. It’s fun fantasy, folks.

Heres some van bondage from the 70’s TV show Charlies Angels.

The stupid plot was about an arab sheik paying for female marathon runners to be kidnapped so his daughter can win the race.

Nice pictures, Bob. Wife and I both think we remember that one.

Did anyone watch “Charlie’s Angels” for the plots?

I certainly didn’t. I’m sure everyone still remembers the episode when they all went “undercover” in a women’s prison and wore chains for most of the episode.

Then there was Baywatch, another show no one watched for the plot. It too had the female stars getting tied up and handcuffed on a regular basis. It was such a cliche that when the Baywatch spoof “Son of the Beach” ran for a couple of seasons in the early 2000s, it had its own share of kidnap plots.

    Ahhhh, Charlie’s Angels! Yum!

    🙂

Sometimes, we don’t even know how a film is going to turn out. There are so many little decisions and practical things that affect the tone that sometimes we don’t know what mood we’ll end up with until we’ve finished the edit.

For this video, I think the original intention was to play it straight as a kidnap scenario, but as soon as Anita appeared in the Madonna-esque bra it was clear that we were going to be going for something a bit more high-camp. Only when we saw the edit did we realise that Scarlot’s relative lack of struggles to permit the cutting clothes off bit to be done safely lent itself to a semi-consensual scenario. So we edited the film with that subtext in mind, rather than trying to drama it up and cut out bits of shot where Scarlot didn’t seem to be protesting enough. We could have dropped screams over the top and cut the film with much more aggressive, fast-paced short cuts and a more intense soundtrack if we’d decided to go the opposite way, the footage just naturally seemed to lead in a less realistic, higher camp direction!

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and glad it was worth hiring the van!

    Cheers, Hywel.

Thanks Hywel. I am pretty sure I would have loved it as much (but differently) if you had played it “straight”. Perhaps another time. 🙂

Ahhh yes, Baywatch Babes in Bondage. And “Son of the Beach”: the dungeon scene in “With Sex, You Get Egg Roll”. One snag was that (for obvious reasons in mainstream tv) the girls could always slip out of the cuffs. RE has the right idea. 😀

Yes, I also noticed how the girls could slip out of the handcuffs in that Son Of The Beach episode. Kinda ruins it, doesn’t it?

Another example (though with less visually interesting victims) was in the classic Star Trek episode Patterns of Force. As Kirk and Spock are attempting to escape from the Nazi prison, one of Kirk’s handcuffs is very obviously open. I guess that was safer given what he was trying to do.

Funny how we always seem to notice such little things, eh?

Is this how things work on an internet forum (I’m still a little new to it)? We start discussing an abduction video and pretty soon we’re talking about whether Shatner could act his way out of an open pair of handcuffs. 😀

But it is so tempting to move on to bondage in tv Sci Fi. The revived Doctor Who regularly has his assistants (and sometimes himself) shackled. And I’m sure it was just coincidence or for some technical reason that our prim, proper, politically correct BBC chose this camera angle of Billie Piper awaiting dissection at the hands of clockwork robots. 🙂
