I suspect the Hammerlock is stricter and less comfortable than the Reverse Prayer, but to my eye it doesn’t look as bad. (There is something about Reverse Prayer that just squicks me…)

So I’d like to urge you, whenever you’re deciding between a Reverse Prayer and a Hammerlock tie, to do the Hammerlock. And that goes double if I’m wrong and the Hammerlock actually isn’t less comfortable.

One other point: Whoever was doing the photography was having an off-day getting the framing right. Other than that, great work. I really liked the dress, the ropework (especially after the leg ties were added) and the inclusion of those white step-stairs for Missey to sit on while all bound and helpless.

    Thanks for your comments!

I did both the rigging and the shooting. As for my ‘off day’, it was the first and only time shooting in the infinity cove and thus I was exploring the space. The shots will undoubtedly look different to those by Hywel and Steve who have shot there countless times. Plus, framing is subjective – hopefully most of our members weren’t too offended… 😉

The hammerlock is a favourite of mine – and something that I try every so often as I have a distinct image in my head of how I want it to look. I haven’t got there yet, but that one with Missey was the closest so far!

To me, there is never a moment where the hammerlock and reverse prayer ties are interchangeable. They are both very different and I will continue to shoot both of them. The reverse prayer can be rigged in a really simple and elegant way that gives a totally different look and feel to the set than a hammerlock would.

As for comfort, different models are ‘designed’ in different ways. I, for example, can stay in an elbows together tie for a substantial amount of time and find reverse prayer and hammerlock tricky to stay in. Other models seem to find reverse prayer simple but don’t do elbows together. The hammerlock and reverse prayer pull on totally different areas of the back, arms and shoulders and so difficulty depends on the way that the rope is tied as well as weak spots / basic anatomy of the model.

    Thanks for the explainations.

Even if the hammerlock and the reverse prayer aren’t interchangable, I’d still like to see more hammerlocks and fewer reverse prayers. Call me an atheist, or maybe a pagan Thor-worshiper  but I really do like the hammerlock “look” while I’ve been quietly waiting for the RE crew to get tired of reverse prayers. There was a while when they seemed to be showing up quite frequently.

Of course, now that I’ve posted this, I expect others to show up chanting “More reverse prayers! More reverse prayers!” We audience members are an annoying lot, and Hywel can’t please everyone. 😕

Hehe, well you can’t please everyone all of the time!

I know that I went through a phase of loving to tie reverse prayers for a while before I became fixated on the hammerlock… we all go through phases I think! At every shoot, I do try to do a tie that I have never done or seen before and hopefully we show enough variety to prevent our audience members getting too bored. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Just to further prove that you can’t please everyone all the time, I have to say I’m not particularly fond of either the reverse prayer or hammerlock positions; they just look too painful.

I go most for the standard hands-cuffed/tied-behind-the-back position, palms together and wrists as close together as possible. I know from experience that this is both very confining and reasonably comfortable. Attaching the cuffs/rope to a waist chain or rope makes it even more confining and secure without being any less comfortable. The “JenniC Kitchen Chores” set was a perfect example of what I like.

I guess the only thing Restrained Elegance can do is to continue providing a lot of variety. That way you’re sure to please at least some of us some of the time!
