I’m using a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro both with OSX 10.7.5 and Safari 6.0.5. Over the past 3 weeks I’ve had an intermittent problem downloading photo sets from the RE site. When I right-click on the zip download link and select “Download Linked File”, I’m asked for my user ID and password. When I provide that I get a message “You must be logged in to access this content” But I am logged in! I’ve reset Safari, cleared cookies, cleared passwords from my keychain and the problem persists. Then after some hours is goes away.

If I select “Download Linked File As…” instead, I’m also prompted for a password, but the zip downloads.

With Safari 5.0.5 there is no password prompt, but the same results.

With FireFox 12 clicking on the download link got the same message. Then I updated to FireFox 22 and that works fine.

Has anyone else noticed a problem trying to download zipped photo sets using Safari on a Mac?

    TIA

I can replicate some of the behaviour, using Safari 6.0.4 on Mac OX 10.8.3, but don’t get the download failures.

I get the password prompt when I try to download using “Download linked file”, but the download works; the file is not automatically unzipped.

I don’t get the password prompt using “download linked file as…” and the download works; the file is not automatically unzipped.

Clicking directly on the ZIP file icon downloads, no password prompt, and the ZIP file is automatically unzipped.

Firefox 21.0 also works for me, with no password prompts.

I don’t actually understand why something different happens (password prompt) when using download file, but at least I don’t get a failure to download ever, just an annoying extra pop-up.

The fact that the problem is intermittent is maddening- because it might happen for me too, if I try at the right time or when the right mix of other things are going on. I don’t suppose you’ve noticed any pattern to when it happens, have you? There are a few things which might change with server load, or when a small number of timed things happen on the site (caches get cleared once an hour, updates happen once a day, backup jobs run, etc.)

Has anyone else using a Mac seen similar behaviour?

    Cheers, Hywel.

I’m glad to hear I’m not alone with this problem.

Yesterday, my Mac Pro worked fine and my MacBook Pro exhibited the problem. Sometimes I can also download successfully after entering the password. Sometimes I get the “You must be logged on…” message.

On a few occasions, downloading a video stopped the problem, but not always.

So far I’ve only seen this problem with Restrained Elegance. HOWEVER, I just tried an experiment. I’m currently a member of Bondage Cafe. Tech support told me they support both sites. Normally I download from Bondage Cafe by simply clicking on the download link. Today, I right-clicked and chose “Download Linked File” and got the use-id prompt! The ZIP download OK, but did not open.

It seems this problem is related to the server software and Safari in some way.

We updated the password protection scripts a few days ago.

The problems seem to be fixed; let me know if anyone else sees this problem again.

    Cheers, Hywel.
