I do call it political correctness gone mad when people object to the term “Oriental” to refer to the peoples and cultures of the eastern fringe of the Eurasian landmass. And I will rant about it.

It’s no more disparaging than the terms European, African, Middle Eastern, Siberian, Latin American, Scandinavian, Mediterranean etc. Those who object are nothing more pearl-clutchers launching an abusive attack on free speech. They’re not really any different from – or any better than – the religious nuts who go on about how sick, sinful, and shameful the producers, models, and members of Restrained Elegance all are, because of the material it produces. With a large hint that we should stop in shame – and should be made to stop, by force, if we don’t accept the big bowl of shame they ladle out.

I am happy to modify my language in response to changes in acceptable usage, generally. I don’t want to be an arse or insulting to anyone.

But I’m not going to do so when a term is perfectly acceptable in polite usage where I live, but is going out of fashion in acceptable usage in another place where I don’t 🙂

    Cheers, Hywel
