Quick question to the RE crew, how do you get the police-style handcuffs and legirons in your shoots very shiny/mirror-like glossy? I have identical looking models – metal polish helps but can’t match your efforts.

Also great site, good job to all.

    Cheers.

I’m afraid we don’t do anything! They all live in a big box together, not very carefully packed. I guess they get oiled naturally every time we shoot a set where the model has baby oil or moisturiser on her skin, but we don’t clean or polish them specifically and I’d expect them to be duller than average because they must get a bit knocked about when we transport everything to shoots.

My suspicion is that it may be to do with the lighting- if you see the reflection of a great big white softbox in the cuffs, they are going to look like shining mirrors. But otherwise, try oiling the cuffs up with a very light coating of a light mineral oil like baby oil and see if that achieves the desired finish?

    Cheers, Hywel.

Handcuffs are available in a wide variety of finishes, but only nickel plating gives you that shiny look you’re after. Are you sure yours were even nickel plated to begin with? If so, could the plating have worn off?

There are commercial electroplating outfits that will nickel-plate almost anything you want, but I don’t know if you could plate handcuffs without damaging the internal mechanism.

You can even get color-coded handcuffs these days. http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com carries CTS Thompson cuffs in nine colors. Including pink, which I’d bet is the most popular color by far.

Thanks for the reply Hywel, I’m beginning to suspect it is lighting as I’ve just found I can see my own reflection in them with the right lighting angles, brightness, etc.

anonanonanon7, these are nickel plated – I have others that aren’t and they are quite dull from new.
