Hiya,
Just wanted to show some photos that I took of Sabrina last week! It was strange shooting just for me after doing so much for RE, it was also strange shooting with my camera (I want a 5D! Mine is so slow!) but it was great fun experimenting with lighting and stuff and shooting for one particular shot rather than for a whole set… Not to mention that I didn’t need to worry about getting some barefoot close-ups and tying her up (that was VERY strange!)…
Hope you like the results – I haven’t finished fully messing around with them yet… Thanks *SO* much to Sabrina for making me do this!!!!!! I think it will be the first of many now!

Sabrina should put no 3 and no 1 in her portfolio PDQ,
Frank
… and now back to downloading what I shot today, and hope that even one is as good.
August 12, 2007 at 20:43 #10898Hi Kate (and Sabrina!),
LOVE the photos! Stunning stuff!
I know completely what you mean about the benefits of being able to shoot aiming for one great shot rather than having to shoot a set. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting for RE and it is a great way to make a living, but it does impose some requirements on the way we shoot when we know we have to end up with 40+ good shots in a set, rather than a single striking photo.
I like what you’ve done with the colours, particularly on shot number two which is a subtle bronze/burnout look that would really grace the pages of any magazine.
The colours haven’t worked quite so well on shot four to my eyes, a bit over the top on Sabrina’s skin… maybe a bit too much yellow or something?
I like the mixture of soft and sharp focus on shot five, although I might have been tempted to sharpen Sabrina’s eyes just a touch in photoshop to bring them a bit more “out” if you see what I mean.
Love the combination of glamour and grunge on shot six, and here again the colour effect is working really well. The purple gel works really well for me on shot seven but is maybe a little overpowering for shot eight- I think the colours work better where half the face is highlighted by the gel rather than mostly the nose.
Have to agree with Frank that the first one is a killer shot for the portfolio: great eyes, great expression, crisp clean clear black and white, nice tight crop- lovely! Did you have a wind machine on for the slightly windblown look of the hair? Whatever, love it!
And many many thanks for showing them off here! I’m wondering whether we should start a new forum section for photography (that way Ariel doesn’t have to get all in a huff with us when we start talking techie… ??? :p )
Hywel.
August 12, 2007 at 20:45 #10899P.S. Just noticed that that was your 100th post as well, Kate!
What a way to celebrate becoming a centurion!!
August 13, 2007 at 12:16 #10900Yay !! Way to go Kate !!
Many congratulations on producing some evocative images here. Beautiful work and good for you for going it alone too (hmm, I know how scary that is!)
I think you’ve done an outstanding job. Love them all, but especially 1, 2 & 3. :notworthy
I also REALLY like the ideas you’ve put into the shot like using some cash in No.2, and the shopping basket in the last image. It’s very inventive and a lovely touch. Wish I could come up with ideas like that!
Good luck if your thinking of planning any more shoots in the future too. Would love to see more of your work and thanks for sharing these.
Hywel, I think having a section for photography could be a really good idea! 🙂
Steve :cheers
August 13, 2007 at 17:19 #10901Hi Kate,
I love your pics. The ones with Sabrina are great. Though Sabrina is a cutie so you have a head start, but they are good.

August 13, 2007 at 18:32 #10902Oooh nice!
That closely cropped first shot is great, is that you in the catchlights Kate?
The third shot is a cute effect too, just the kinda technique I’ve been meaning to experiment with for ages.. I initially thought you’d just used saturation blending on a duplicate layer but then I noticed you’ve included the gold of the lippy and the brown of Sabrina’s eyes too which has got me thinking.. Guessing you could have used a Sat/Hue Adjustment Layer with the master channel @ -99 and then put the red channel back in (sorry about this Ariel..) but that still wouldn’t put the gold etc back in unless there’s some way of extending the selection? eye dropper somehow?? Surely you’ve not taken the time to paint over a mask??? Somebody put my mind to rest here please! :oo
Lovin’ the abstract nature of the last shot too, combined with Sabrina’s 1000yrd stare its a FHM classic!
Wicked location for the latter shots, I’d never have thought of it! Hope its not your living room Kate :p, kinda “demolition site chic”
Thanks for sharing 🙂

August 14, 2007 at 18:00 #10906Wow! Thanks *SO Much* for the really encouraging comments! I was a bit nervous about posting the pics to be honest but you have given me a massive confidence boost!
Number 1 is my favourite – it was shot in the same ‘set’ as the second one. We used a fan, Hywel, and yes, Merlin, that is me in the catchlights standing in front of a really mega cool MASSIVE soft box type contraption.
Thanks for the compliments about adding details, Steve. I am quite an organised person and need to have structure or I lose focus quite easily so I decided to aim for 7 specific shots based on the 7 deadly sins. The money in shot 2 was for Greed. The part black and white and part colour one was for Vanity (Nothing too technical about how I did that, Merlin – I just used the desaturate brush on Photoshop Elements and took the colour out of the bits I wanted to be black and white. I then sharpened the hair and the eyes and the lipstick). The nude shots were for Lust – Sabrina found a few packs of love hearts so we scattered them on the cushions. Gluttony and Envy didnt really work – but Sabrina managed to get a cream cake out of it – Sloth involved lots of empty wine bottles, a pizza box and a traffic cone! Funny but not really sexy. Wrath was interesting – still working on shots from that one (Ariel may show a bit of that when she finally comments on this thread too….)
The location for the last few pics was a great find on the day of the shoot – we just HAD to take some pics there after we had go the sinning out of the way! It was fun trying to find things to put in the shopping basket.
Sabrina – we definitely MUST do this again! And I think we should have a Photography section!

August 14, 2007 at 20:51 #10907Ooh, well done Kate and Sabrina! I want to see ‘wrath’ and ‘greed’ now 🙂 Really hope we can have a photography section – would love to see what everyones’ ideas are for what makes a really good picture 🙂
I like the shopping basket one best – is beautiful….
August 14, 2007 at 23:00 #10908Thought there was a thread but couldn’t put my finger on it, thats what all day looking through a V/F does to you, but more importantly you and Sabrina MUST get together again to fiinsh it.
No 9 is growing on me especially the detail in the detritus on the floor, there’s a Drew Gardner (The Morning After) that has the same effect, so you’re in good company, don’t know what it says about me, but I’ll blame my art history tutor. Only one question, a buyers guide to what?
The gold on the lipstick was the master stroke (and Merlin’s puzzlement a bonus).

August 16, 2007 at 21:42 #10909Hi all
Ah! now I geddit.. 7 deadly sins of course..
For what its worth I did eventually perfect the technique of partial de-saturation by using an adjustment layer and creating a custom channel of the wanted colours only but as I sat back feeling really smug to myself about how clever I am I realised my quick and automated method is actually no quicker and dead complicated! :banghead doh!
Still loving that last shot but if I may be just a little critical the more I see it the more one little thing drives me crazy.. that damn “post it” note on the wall at Sabrinas eye level – aaargh! Pleeese clone it out 😀
So do we get to see more? Sloth and Wrath sound interesting and if you can make something of Gluttony using Sabrina as your model you’re a genius Kate! :p
Liking the idea of the photography section..
Cheers
