I’m still recovering from the operation (ewwww) but went briefly back to work yesterday for a commercial shoot that couldn’t be re-scheduled. All was fine, except that I couldn’t lie on my tummy cos it still hurts too much. In the weeks leading up to the operation I was having the same problem (including during both our location trips, boo) and I realised I haven’t been able to do hogties for over two months now. Obviously I’ll hopefully be to totally better soon, and shall resume doing hogties, but I suddenly wondered why they’re so popular? If I’d temporarily lost the ability to do strappado, I don’t know if it would have been so noticeable. Why are hogties so important, I wonder?
A couple of bondage producers I know have said that hogties always sell best (in that they get the most signups on days where their new update is of a hogtied model) and I’ve heard lots of people (models and bondage fans) say that it’s their favourite position.
So please, tell me why! I’ve got nothing against them at all, but it’s not my favourite position for a few reasons;-
1) I’m not altogether sure what you can really do with someone in a hogtie. As far as I can see, you can’t really have sex with them, and spanking is sadly out of the question because their hands get in the way. Nipple clamps would really, REALLY hurt because they’d get squashed – ouch!
2) Err, that’s it really.

Hello everyone. The hogtie is certainly one of my favorite positions for bondage. At times it can be my favorite one but I also really like a spread eagle on a bed (obvious for its love making possibilities) and I also like seeing a model tethered to something and particularly am a fan of cage scenarios. I would guess with the latter two it is a form of control thing…. knowing that the lady is not going anywhere anytime soon. My speculation on the general bondage population’s reason for liking the position so much may well be a combination of both a control thing since done properly a hogtie (either classic hands behind the back and tightly linked to the angles or the cross ankle variation) is very difficult to escape from and often the lady can be in the position for a reasonably long time, but is also one of the most helpless positions one can be placed in without being tied to an object. Often the subject can do little else other than roll from lying on her tummy to lying on her wrists and ankles and back again. Obviously the helpless factor is really part of the control element but I think many people often tend to separate that out for its own element as they simply enjoy seeing their partner (real life or in fantasy images) so helpless. Of course as the lady is rolling around trying to escape you get to enjoy her form from many different angles which certainly is not a bad thing. I know that the US bondage publishing firm Harmony Communications did a survey of positions and reasons for bondage in their lead magazine back sometime in the 1990’s and the hogtie was the favorite then as well. If I recall correctly, many of the male respondents said they enjoyed both playing the villain who puts the lady in bondage as well as playing the “white knight” who rescues her and gets her “reward” for having rescued her. So while the hogtie might not allow for easy sexual activity itself, with the lady’s “rescue” her reward to her rescuer becomes the ends to justify the means of her helpless. I think it may well be the sum of the experience and just the position itself. My two cents.

That’s a good question. (Translation: I have no real clue as to the answer.)
As a wild speculation, it may be a combination of the hogtied captive looking really helpless and of the hogtie being the bondage version of the very common playful & flirty-sexy pose where a woman lies on her stomach with her feet in the air.
They’re my favorite too, and I think Jeff hit the main reasons: they combine inescapability with a high degree of helplessness yet (done right) they’re still reasonably comfortable so you can stay in one for a while. It’s not impossible to have sex in a hogtie, especially if you don’t mind being on your side, but there are other things you can do that are fun for both.
Besides, they just look neat.

Couple of observations tho, firstly it is obviously about the most immobilising tie you can quickly rig. If you consider bondage as sub punishment/humiliation/discipline training then placing the sub ontop of a small coffee table has served me well in the past as she can’t even roll.. toe wiggling is about the limit 😉 Thats gotta be worth something.
Bondage for me has mostly been about drawn out foreplay and with a female sub if the top rolls her onto her side (feet away) then the best bits of her anatomy kinda just present themselves in a very appealing and useful way and there’s nothing she can do about it mmMMmm . Sex is definately possible (with untied knees and crossed ankles) but a bit clumsy and requires the top to have sufficient body strength to manhandle the bottom into position, potentially a bit painful for everyone. Err, I’d imagine.. 😳

i agree whith Ariel – not one of my favorites. A position where lovemaking is possible is more appeling. On the other hand – playing bondage can be done for houers – most of us cant make love for that long…
A semifree position is much more interesting – arms gone in an armbinder (still missing a good one) or a tight box or elbows together tie – the girl can play along but is still very much in a surrendered state.
Or just locked in 5 sm-factory items – also very sexy.

Some of the previous replies have hinted at this, but I think fetish appeal also plays a role in why the hogtie is a favorite. I have a fetish for legs and feet, so being able to see a tightly-bound sub while getting a good view of her bum, legs, and the soles of her feet as well as her face just plays to my attractions. Even better is when a sub (or partner, model, etc.) struggles and rolls around, as in the hogtie the range of motion is reduced to maybe shifting your legs from one side to another, if you can manage that. As an example, the old set of Tigerr Benson hogtied in her purple Chinese outfit plays to my aforementioned fetish and attractions: I get a great view of her pretty face, and when she curls her legs in it really brings out the curvature of her bum and legs, and all of this on top of the soles of her feet occasionally being shown. Even if a sub didn’t move around much in a hogtie, the fetishes I mentioned above still apply.
Granted, other positions can achieve the same result in terms of playing to my fetish, but then what sets the hogtie apart is, as was mentioned before, the look of helplessness the position creates in the sub.
Anon’s right about the hogtie not being impossible for sex, and I also agree there’s easier positions. To that end, high five to Merlin – I hear ya with the boxtie/frogtie combo 🙂

Nope, hogtie beats that. Can anyone else thing of something as effective as a hogtie with such a small amount of rope required?

Since I do not have a real life model to tie, my interest is in viewing the models here. And a model hogtied is not very interesting to me. She may be helpless. She may be exposed for all to see. She may even writhe around quite a bit, showing her breasts. All of these are very nice, but it doesn’t do much for my imagination (for reasons Ariel stated.)
My prayers are with Ariel for her rapid healing.

Hogties are good for two reasons.
First; It looks to be the most restrictive position for the model.
Second; there are more pictures taken from behind the model. Too many picture sets
where the model has her arms secured behind her back are mainly shot from in front
and occasionally from the side.keep up the good work
trouble.Hogties do do things for my imagination, but I suspect that my imagination is unusually “tactile.” I imagine that a hogtied captive feels especially helpless, especially if she tries to struggle. And I imagine it as a good position to touch and tease the captive all over, especially if you roll her over to her side – and she can’t do anything about it.
OK, so it’s not such a good position for spanking or nipple clamps, but I’m more than happy to leave those things out. And it’s not such a good position for sex, but few bondage positions really are good for sex. Those that are strike me as being rather specialized: They’re better for intercourse, but not as good as a hogtie for imposing general helplessness. So I figure that when the time for sexual intercourse comes, the captive can be untied, partly untied, or retied in a new position (and by that time we’ll both be ready for a change of position anyway…)

Hmm… What I like about hogties are the way it feels beeing in them, I feel a kind of helpless feeling wich I really like. In the same time it one of the postions where I like to struggle, trying to get loose or just enjoying the feeling of helplessnes while I struggle.
I think that hogties are comfortable to be in for a long time, depending on what kinds of ropes or metal are used. Agree with that you can´t move around much but that both the good and the bad part of it 🙂
One thing more I like is the variations the hogtie gives for your hands to be tied,
