    Hi All,

Just a quickie in case I am out of touch for a few days.

There was a TON of rain in the southern half of England over the last few days, and there’s now a flood alert on the River Thames. My house is on the biggest hill for miles around, so no problems there, but the studio is on the edge of the flood plain.

I went over to the studio this morning and moved as many of the small high-value things like lights, cameras and SM-factory cuffs upstairs as I could. The environment agency just phone me with the flood warning, so it is now a matter of seeing what happens. Fingers crossed.

In theory as the house is high on a hill I should still be in touch, but who knows where the cable broadband stations are- might lose internet connection if they get flooded.

So if I don’t reply to stuff for a few days, that’ll probably be why.

The servers are all in the USA so the site itself should be unaffected. I’ve got the photosets and first few videos done for August but they aren’t uploaded yet… they are all on the PCs at home though so unless there’s a major problem with internet connections I should be able to get them all up in time.

    Cheers, Hywel.

Hope you weren’t too affected by the floods, Hywel – as well as anyone else down there. I thought you jammy southerners had managed to miss out on all the water action…! what is going on with our weather???? And when, oh when, is summer going to arrive?

Why am i always the last to know? Well since i can see the thames from my house it looks okay at the minute. Me being a trained weather thingy person specialising in floods and all.

If my feet start to get wet i’ll let you all know.

Just been over to the studio. Thames still in its banks here although looking very brown and angry. Flood alert still in place, and since there’s flooding in Oxford, Abingdon, Goring, Streatley and Pangbourne and Reading is the next settlement down the river, I decided to move everything I could from downstairs to upstairs, turn the power off and cross my fingers!

All seems OK at the moment but flood alert is for a rising river surge over the next 48 hours, and there’s more rain on the way. Don’t you just LOVE the British summer? :p ???

    Hywel.

P.S. thanks to people who’ve emailed wishing me luck. I should emphasise that the studio is right on the edge of the flood plain, so the flood would have to be PRETTY bad to get that far… But I’d feel like a right nana
    :nana :nana :nana
if having had the flood warning I couldn’t be bothered to spend a couple of hours shifting kit at the studio just in case. After all, the cameras will be just as happy sitting on a shelf upstairs as sitting on the floor downstairs…

    Cheers, Hywel.

Well, I really wish you good luck! (And of course everyone else around south-west England who might be in trouble)
Hopyfully, you haven’t forgotten any equipment or slavegirls! 😀

I’ve seen the pictures this morning, doesn’t look pretty. Here in Germany, we are more or less used to regular floodings, but I guess for you this is a premiere.
Btw, lots of rain showers over here, too.

PS: please welcome the 21st “where-Mother-nature-will-screw-you” Century. Wasn’t global warming about sunshine and hot summers?

Good luck with the flood Hywel. I’ve been seeing the pictures on the news. It looks fairly crazy with just the sheer number of rescues needing to be undertaken. It looks like early in the flood the water rose really quickly. Is that right?

Isn’t it cruel that you are experiencing floods whilst on the other side of the world here in Australia we are experiencing (the experts say coming out of) the worst drought in European history on the continent. We’ve been in drought for more or less 4 years where I live – let me tell you that being on water restrictions in the middle of winter is a novel experience indeed!

But just in the middle, or not?

If I am not mistaken, Australia just had a flood due to heavy rainfall about two months ago, but I think it was just on the east coast. I have a friend there that was unable to go to work for at least a week, because she was totally cut from the city.

Basically the whole country outside of the tropics and the desert areas (which between them makes up about 85% of the country but about 2% of the population!!!) has been in drought for the last few years. Your right though the coastal fringe, which has been in drought too, got huge amounts of rain recently and had some really big floods – but unfortunately they were all coastal flowing rivers. I’m about 500km inland and our inland flowing rivers didn’t pick up any rain. But things are looking better. July has had almost average rainfall and if it keeps going this way the local farmers should atleast be able to harvest something (still sub-standard) this summer.

California could use some of your rain. Please send over a few inches. Oh, a few multi-million dollar homes will slide off cliffs. But, in general only the really wealthy will be affected.

…..and please…don’t do a Vincent Price and leave any poor slavegirls caged in the dungeon as the water rises.

Well, looks like we got away with it this time, no flooding in this area. Other parts of England have not been so lucky, so phew! relief all around.

    Cheers, Hywel.

    Must have been pretty close.

I remember a flood here about a decade ago. It went out pretty lucky, but you really have no idea how devastating water can be, unless you experience it.

    So phew, lucky You.

That certainly is good news for you personally then Hywel.
