    Hywel,

I thought today’s Cate Harrington video looked really nice! Have you recently added a lens adapter or something to your video camera? I really loved the short depth of field you were able to produce in this shot. (Maybe it’s been there before, but this was the first time I noticed it.) It seems to me to be a much shorter depth of field than you’d be able to create with an out-of-the-box setup.

    Great work!

(Oh, and by the way, how do you pronounce your name? “Hue-ell”?)

    Take care,
    Doc.

    .. nope…

I pronounce it How-well (how as in “how do you do?” “well” as “very well thank you”). Run the two words together just slightly and there you have it.

    🙂

Going back to the earlier question, yes, this was shot on Steve’s 5DMk2. I can’t remember exactly which lens, but either a fast prime or a fast zoom used at f/2.8 or even larger which gives the shallow depth of field.

These dSLR’s are not ideal for video shooting. They have LOTS of handling compromises because they are stills cameras primarily- thing like no audio bars, no zebra, limited or no autofocus whilst shooting video. They also have image quality issues like aliasing (which comes form the way the sensor are read out skipping lines) and jellocam (which comes from the readout of the bottom of the sensor being done later than the readout of the top of the sensor, which means things can have moved during that time and appear slanted as a result). The video files are also very heavily compressed.

But… just LOOK at the footage! The dSLRs excel at the sort of cinematic, shallow depth of field footage that makes gorgeous girls looks great. That makes them a very valuable addition to our kit for shooting some sorts of videos.

I just traded in my old 5D, 40D and D60 on eBay in order to buy a 7D as a backup stills camera and front-line video camera. Unlike the 5D2, the 7D does 50/60 fps in 720p for slowmo. It has a smaller sensor, so slightly larger depth of field, but with a fast prime wide open it is plenty shallow enough, and much shallower than the 1/3″ sensors in the Panasonic HVX200.

The two types of camera have complementary strengths and weaknesses, so it is very useful for us to keep both in our armoury.

Glad you liked the video of Cate- we have lots more to come, and we’re taking the 5D2 and 7D on location this summer to shoot more videos in this cinematic style as well!

    Cheers, Hywel.

You’ve been living in England too long!

No, that’s how my Welsh-speaking father and native-first-language Welsh grandmother pronounced it, too. I have heard it pronounced the other way, but at least around Swansea where I come from, the how-well variant was more common.

    Cheers, Hywel.
