I’ll second the idea of “having fun in bondage” sets. I can’t think of any specific suggestions at the moment, but I like the general idea.

I keep thinking I ought to try the shallow depth-of-field thing, except that not only do I have a small space, but I have a small sensor, too (Nikon crop-sensor). Another thing I keep thinking I ought to try is a stripbox or striplight in the back corner. Then I think of how it’s likely to be an expensive and unlikely-to-succeed experiment.

The home studio has a home-made pvc-pipe background stand. If I decide to try the speedlight-above-the-model technique, I could get a clamp to hold the speedlight on the top of the background stand, rather than trying to boom it from the side.

If by backlight you mean a rim or side light on the model, well, I was trying, but that’s where “pig to light” came in. I had a gridded light in the back corner, camera right. You can see the light from it in the hair and shoulder of Tori in photo 1, and on the upper arm of Bharati in photo 3. I did arrange to keep that light off the background, but I just did not have enough room to allow much space between the background and the model.

Or did you mean deliberately lighting the background to create a sort of aura behind the model?

As for these being more consistent than my earlier efforts, well, thanks! I think part of that is the flash meter I got off of ebay, and part is that I am actually slowly learning.

Thanks for commenting! And if I won’t be seeing you at Fetishcon this year, then maybe some other time.

The regular pics in that set are 960 x 1280. The big pic is 4872×6496, which is ~25 times as many pixels. So the filesize will be ~25 times a large given the same degree of compression.

If you’re asking why the big pics are 4872 x 6496, I belive that’s the full resolution of RE’s big Hasselblad camera.

It’s a legacy of how photo resolutions have increased over the years. At first, all the photos in new sets were of “regular” size. Later, the new sets had all the photos in the set at “regular” size, with a few of them in both “regular” and “large” size. Still later, new sets were offered in two sizes, “regular” and “large,” as with the current updates. Which type an archive set is depends on what era the set is from.

I know it’s your view. But it’s not my view. That’s OK; we disagree.

It’s just that it’s one of my pet peeves when someone “agrees” with me about something I don’t agree with.

@doug340: Actually we don’t agree about the need for full nudity. “Bound and Displayed” is a set where I liked the nudity in spite of my general preference for RE to have fewer full-nude sets and more sets with skimpy and partial clothing, instead.

FWIW, I’ve got three “hammerlock” sets downloaded from RE: One is “misseychinesehammerlock1” (Missey in a chinese dress), one is “videoarielhammerlock1” (Ariel on a bed), and the third is “ariellexiconhammerlock1” (the most recent of the three; Ariel against the white cyc background).

And on further checking, you did put a couple of the lexicon hammerlock photos up in the set “lexicon3”

I’ll note that I like the hammerlock tie: It may be just as strict & stressful as the reverse-prayer, but it doesn’t bother me nearly as much. So let me put in my nudge for RE making more use of them.

I agree that hands-cuffed-behind is great for making the model look helpless and vulnerable – normally. But if the point is to show the model actually doing things despite her restraints, then hands-cuffed-behind, well, backfires.

Showing the model being able to do stuff (in a cutely limited way) despite her hands being cuffed behind her takes away from the idea that hands-cuffed-behind is such a great way to make the model helpless, in addition to the other factors that annoy me.

Maybe if those other factors didn’t bother me, I’d see the limitations imposed by hands-behind here as cute and sexy, rather than jarring. Maybe if things were slightly different it wouldn’t bother me so. If the models wore miniskirts rather than being 100% bare-ass nude. Or if the models were manipulating keys, or wrenches, or other tools rather than food and food-prep and party things.

But as a matter of personal taste, there’s a negative synergy going here that does cause it to bother me.

Pling says her hair is very popular. I can understand why. 🙂

I am slowly learning about lighting. The light meter really did help, in this case.

The tech details are: Main light camera right – 64 inch white PLM at midlevel and pointed slightly down. Fill light camera left, gridded reflector bounced off the white ceiling (grid for cutting down the power and trying to control spill). Rim light in the back right corner, low and aimed slightly up, also gridded.

Exactly *where* the fill light was aimed at the ceiling turned out to be important. I had it too far forward for the first two or three sets, but at the right position for Pling’s set and the ones following.

You can see the catchlight from the PLM in Pling’s eyes. I really like that modifier. It looks like just a big umbrella, but it really does have that parabolic secret sauce going for it. And it is big. And here in the US, Paul Buff’s stuff is cheap.

Oh, and I rented a fancy lens for the shoot: Nikon 24-120mm f/4. It’s a big, full-frame lens, that’s 36-180mm equivalent on my DX camera. But I don’t have to worry about vignetting, and my temptation to buy my own copy survived my experience with the rental. (I also had my 35mm and 50mm primes, but I didn’t use them. I needed the zoom flexibility due to the cramped space.)

So it sounds like it happens just often enough to worry about, but not quite often enough for a person in my position to actually do something about :/ But it also sounds like a good reason to keep my D90 around as a backup when I do finally give in to the urge to upgrade.

“Dave the Hasselblad” – I didn’t know you named your cameras. Or is it only the elite cameras with levels in PC classes that get names?

I’m getting ready to go the Fetishcon again, and as usual I’m worrying about not having anything better than a point & shoot as a back up camera. How often have you run into situtations where your main camera died and you had to rely on a back-up?

And then after Hywel’s warning we get “Spread and loving it” which is just the sort of thing that I’ve been making a pest of myself about wanting to see.

    • Leather cuffs and spreader bars, different from the usual rope or metal cuffs. CHECK.
    • Skimpy sleeveless outfit, different from the recently-common (and admittedly popular) full nudity. CHECK
    • Avoids those unpleasantly “artistic” Dutch Angles CHECK
Photos taken from multiple positions, rather than from a single camera angle. CHECK
    • Well-lit, vs “artistic” low-key lighting. CHECK
    • The warm wood background isn’t the sort of “more color” I’ve been asking for – but it works! It gets away from the “black, white, beige” – or at least the sort of thing where the most colorful part of the photo is the model’s skin. It’s different. So CHECK.

Five Stars: “I want to see more like this!”

Thanks Hywel. Fuzzy, order-of-magnitude numbers are still better than no numbers at all. The thought behind my questions (besides morbid curiosity…) was to get a Fermi estimate for the question “would it be worthwhile to suggest that RE relax the ‘willing to work nude’ requirement in order to find more good models?” And it sounds like the answer is “no, not any more than RE does already.”

It’s interesting that bondage experience is a zero to negative factor in your heuristics. I wouldn’t have expected that. Although I would expect models who are bondage enthusiasts first and models second to be a gamble – maybe very good, maybe very bad.

And it occurs to me that the longer shoots you do for RE will have a different dynamic than the short shoots I’ve done at Fetishcon. That my personal experience is not only limited, but skewed.

Ariel, let me add to Doug340’s thanks for your long & thoughtful explaination.

But being the kind of guy I am, I have more questions :p

How many models drop out or get dropped due to “won’t work nude” vs the other factors?

Also, is there a big distinction made between “nude” and “topless” in the UK model pool, or do the two tend to be lumped together?

Doug340, whether the pussy (or nudity in general) is increasing or decreasing depends on the length of your baseline. My own sampling (going back almost to the start of the website – I first joined a month after it opened) suggests that there has been a slight increase in nudity overall, a large increase in “no clothes” nudity, and maybe a slight increase in pussy. But the effect is of a lower proportion of pussy in the no-clothes nudity sets, and that may be what you’re reacting to.

What I’m likely reacting to is the increase in “no-clothes” nudity; my druthers would be for most sets to have partially-clothed nudity, with no-clothes nudity and fully-clothed bondage being equal minorities. But it’s not all that big a deal to me, as long as things don’t go to extremes.

Additional metal-bondage sets with a key dangling from the model’s collar could be cool. The models hands, of course, would be locked behind her back, or attached to a chain or belt around her waist, or maybe in a yoke, so that she cannot reach the key herself. But it would be easily accessable to others…

This might be good as part of an “Honest Omar’s Hotel & Resort” set, or maybe as part of a “nude in metal” set.

Maybe: Model walks into a hotel room, in leg irons, hands cuffed in front and chained to a belt or loop of chain around her waist, wearing a metal collar with the key to her restraints dangling down from it just above her breasts. Next set of shots (most of the set) shows model sitting on the bed, wrists cuffed to the metal-grill-style headboard, spread-eagle style. Or possibly laying on the bed with arms extended above her head, wrists cuffed with the cuffs attached to the headboard. Or to the footboard, if she’s lying the other way around.

Or for those who want more pussy, maybe the model can be completely spread-eagled, each wrist and ankle cuffed to a different corner of the bed. Maybe with her original metal cuffs replaced by leather ones. Maybe the original shots can show the empty leather cuffs already leashed to the bedposts, ready and waiting, as the model walks in with metal cuffs, and then the metal cuffs can be shown laid out on a dresser or chair, before showing shots of the helpless models lying spread-eagled on the bed.

The storyline can be “Room Service, at Honest Omar’s Hotel & Resort”

Like the idea of the transport restraints. Not really a fan of chastity belts.

    Some further ideas:

    Brightly colored handcuffs, e.g.
    http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com/pemo750coplh.html
(other models/manufacturers available, including leg irons)

    “The Grip Restraint System”
    http://www.handcuffwarehouse.com/grresy.html

Finally, one where I don’t have a link to an example, but a “collar and cuffs” set where the handcuffs are attached to the front of the collar. Maybe with a relatively long chain between the cuffs, running through a ring in front of the collar.

That way, the model can reach out with her right hand, but only if she brings her left wrist up close to her collar (and vice versa). Or if she wants to use both hands at once, she’s limited to how far out she can reach. It might make an interesting “nude in steel” set or three.

BTW, my links do tend to be US-centric; I suspect that “the handcuff warehouse” might not be so good a source for you. Do you have any preferred UK or EU links for “toys”?

There’s also a problem with the “front page” of the blog. It looks like the most recent post is something blank, and WordPress returns “Not Found” and offers a search box.

I expected that part about subscription renewals would be dependent on the billing company and may not be practical, which is why I made it a wistful “It Would Be Nice” suggestion.

But creating a link from the member’s area to the appropriate page for account management ought to be easy, given that you were able to give the link in a message in the old forum.

As for getting rid of auto-hypenation in this forum, I have no idea how easy or hard it would be: I imagine it would depend on the innards of WordPress, of which I’m completely ignorant. I just suggested it in case it turns out to be an easy fix.

Let me second the idea of more sets with medieval gowns and (especially) Cheongsams.

I’d also like to put in (another) plug for restraints other than rope & metal – in particular duck tape, rubber straps, and cloth strips.

Maybe a set where a secretary or female lawyer is forced to remove her nylons, and then is tied with them.

I was afraid of that, although I didn’t make the connection of “August = peak travel time for your side of the Atlantic = most expensive” until you mentioned it. August is the middle of the “off-season” in Florida, which is one reason why Fetishcon is held then.

And the successful use of “mesospherically expensive” as a description says something about us both. 🙂
